LNAT Consortium Ltd was founded in 2004 to run the LNAT, and more generally to improve the process of university admissions in law.

The National Admissions Test for Law (LNAT) is operated by LNAT Consortium Ltd in partnership with Pearson VUE, the computer-based testing business of international media company, Pearson Education. The test is professionally written and calibrated by Edexcel for Pearson VUE.

The members of the company, who also nominate its board of directors, are six of the Universities that use the LNAT as part of their law admissions process. They are the Universities of, Bristol, Durham, Nottingham and Oxford, together with King’s College London and University College London. Other Universities have adopted the LNAT as customers of LNAT Consortium Ltd.

The Board of Directors of LNAT Consortium Ltd has responsibility for the development and supervision of the LNAT. The board is committed to widening participation in higher education and closely monitors the access impact of the LNAT.

Pearson VUE administers the LNAT under contract to LNAT Consortium Ltd. Pearson VUE’s responsibilities include registering candidates, organising test centres and test sittings, marking multiple choice questions, and passing results back to participating universities and candidates. Pearson VUE also arranges for the setting and calibrating of LNAT questions by Edexcel.

Edexcel is one of the UK’s leading examining and awarding bodies, and became a Pearson subsidiary in 2003.

It was formed in 1996 by the merger of the Business & Technology Education Council (BTEC), the country’s leading provider of vocational qualifications, and the University of London Examinations & Assessment Council (ULEAC), one of the major exam boards for GCSEs and A levels.

 LNAT Consortium Ltd is a not for profit company limited by guarantee, registered in England and Wales (number 05081173). Its members are all UK universities, who also appoint its directors.
